Bass Phillip Pinot Noir Estate 2013

Bass Phillip needs little introduction to serious Australian Pinot Noir drinkers — it's routinely named among the country's three or four most acclaimed producers of the style, built almost single-handedly by Phillip Jones after he planted the vineyard near Leongatha, South Gippsland, in 1979 (though the first bottles weren't sold until 1991). Jones farmed organically from 1993 and biodynamically from 2002, planting at an extreme density of over 10,000 vines per hectare — almost unheard of in Australia, modelled directly on the high-density practices of grand cru Burgundy, forcing root competition and naturally low yields. In 2020, ownership passed to a consortium that includes Jean-Marie Fourrier of the revered Domaine Fourrier in Gevrey-Chambertin, cementing a direct Burgundy-Australia collaboration and continuing the site's uncompromising, minimal-intervention philosophy. The Estate bottling sits at the entry point of the Bass Phillip hierarchy — below the famed Reserve — but it's the wine that sets the tone for the whole vintage, drawn from the original close-planted estate vineyard, aged 14 months in lightly toasted, tight-grain barrels with a modest portion of new oak, malolactic occurring naturally, gravity-racked off its lees, and bottled without fining or filtration.

The result is Pinot Noir of real clarity and poise: juicy, sweet-fruited, and generously spiced, with red cherry, rose petal, and a touch of charred radicchio, framed by superfine tannins and a delicate, powder-puff acidity that carries the wine to a long, seamless finish. It's immediately appealing yet built to age gracefully over the better part of a decade. Pour it with duck, quail, or a mushroom-forward dish, and you'll understand why Bass Phillip has held cult status — allocation-only, waitlisted for years — for the better part of four decades. This is the wine that first proved Australia could produce Pinot Noir to rival Burgundy on its own terms.
