Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Masters 2020

Regular price $165.00

Of all Ata Rangi's single-vineyard bottlings, Masters is the most personal. The site belongs to Helen Masters — Ata Rangi's longtime winemaker, whose two decades at the helm have helped define the estate's modern reputation — and her husband Ben, who purchased the vineyard in 2015 after it was first planted back in 2001. Sitting roughly four kilometres south of Martinborough town, it's the most southerly of all the Ata Rangi sites, where alluvial gravels shot through with clay retain more moisture and keep the soil noticeably cooler than the gravel-dominant blocks around the village. That means a later harvest and longer hang time, and it shows: the wine typically sees a substantial portion of whole-bunch fermentation, handled with the same intuitive, minimal-intervention touch Helen brings to the entire estate. Certified organic, it's a wine that lets her signature vineyard speak in its purest, most unguarded form.

The result is genuinely singular within the Ata Rangi range: an effusive nose of cherry, damson plum, and violet, laced with star anise and cardamom, carrying through to a palate of dried thyme, nutmeg, and pink peppercorn, with redcurrant and pomegranate threading underneath. The clay in the soil lends real depth and a deeper timbre than the estate's other sites, yet the texture stays fine and lacy — succulent, mineral acidity and delicate tannins spreading the flavour the full length of the palate. It's fresh, elegant, and unmistakably its own voice.
