Wendouree Shiraz 2012

In the Wendouree hierarchy of six cuvées, the straight Shiraz is widely considered the premium expression — the wine that most purely captures what this extraordinary vineyard is capable of. The 2018 vintage was awarded a perfect 100 points, described as probably the finest wine to leave the Wendouree cellars in 25 years. That kind of recognition doesn't happen by accident.

The fruit comes from some of the oldest Shiraz vines in Australia — original plantings dating back to 1893, believed to carry genetic material from the historic James Busby collection, growing unirrigated on shallow red loam over limestone on an easterly ridge at the northern edge of the Clare Valley. Low yields, small berries, thick skins and high seed content combine to produce a wine of exceptional depth and complexity that simply cannot be replicated from younger vines or richer soils.

In the glass, expect blackberry and aniseed with touches of mint, building into a mixture of black and red fruits layered with savoury, earthy iron notes. The trademark Wendouree menthol and eucalypt lift is present but typically more restrained here than across other cuvées in the range, allowing pure fruit and structure to take the lead. The palate is dense, rich and full-bodied, framed by the estate's signature muscular, sinewy tannin — a structure built not to soften quickly, but to evolve and deepen in the cellar for decades. As one respected critic put it, this is a wine where the overall mass of fruit sweetness complements the toughness of the structure, rather than competing with it.

This is a wine ranked by Langton's in the Exceptional tier — the same company as Grange and Hill of Grace — and one of the most consistently extraordinary bottlings in the country. Tony and Lita Brady continue to manage the vineyard with the same low-input, unhurried philosophy that has defined Wendouree since 1893: no shortcuts, no concessions to convenience, just patient stewardship of one of Australia's most significant historic sites.

Production is tiny, demand is immense, and the mailing list remains closed to all but a handwritten letter. If you have stock of this wine, you have something the vast majority of Australian wine drinkers will never get the chance to taste.
