Wendouree Malbec 2023

Few wineries in the world operate with less fanfare than Wendouree. Founded in 1893 by Alfred Percy Birks at the southern end of the Clare Valley, near Sevenhill, the estate has been in the hands of Tony and Lita Brady since 1974, who have maintained it with an almost monastic commitment to tradition: dry-grown, cane-pruned vines with no irrigation, herbicides, or synthetic fertilisers, farmed on red clay over limestone at around 400 metres elevation. Some of the Malbec plantings here date to the early 1900s, among the oldest continuously farmed vines in the Clare Valley. Wendouree closed its doors to the public after 1995 — Tony Brady found people were buying wine at the cellar door simply to resell it — and today the entire operation runs on a handwritten mailing list: no website, no email, no tasting room, just a letter sent and a letter returned. Total production across the whole range is a mere 3,500 cases a year, and every vintage has sold out since that closure three decades ago.

The wines carry a signature described by critics as "an iron fist in a velvet glove" — dense, savoury, and built on firm, structured tannin rather than overt fruit sweetness, with the mint and eucalypt lift characteristic of the Clare Valley threaded through dark, precise fruit. The Malbec in particular has been described as dark-fruited and herbal, supple rather than aggressively tannic, carrying real concentration without heaviness — a wine built for the long game, with the estate's reds routinely cellaring for thirty to fifty years.
