Small Wonder Chardonnay 2024

Small Wonder is a Tamar Valley estate with more history than its youthful branding lets on — the 20-hectare vineyard was first planted back in 1998 under its original name, Goaty Hill, before being acquired by the Overstory group in 2020. Vineyard manager Wayne Nunn has since spent years converting the site to certified organic viticulture, working with winemaker Andrew Trio to map the property's considerable internal diversity — silt loam and ferris mudstone through the lower slopes for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, grey sandy soils higher up suited to aromatic whites. The playful label art is entirely intentional: each wine in the range carries a slightly surreal scene of archival characters set against iconic Tasmanian landscapes, meant to capture the timeless bond between people and place. This Landscape-tier Chardonnay is the entry point into the range, sitting below the more serious, single-block Auburn Chardonnay, but drawn from the same mature, now-organic vineyard.

The result shows real focus for an accessible-tier wine: grapefruit, grilled lemon, sea spray, and a touch of struck match on the nose, leading into a taut, precise palate of lime and yuzu, mouthwatering acidity, and a light smoky oak influence carrying through to a long, refined finish — critics have described it as "quite Chablis-like in its tension." It's a wine that punches well above its everyday price point, reflecting the site's maturity and Tasmania's growing reputation for cool-climate Chardonnay of real precision.
