Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chardonnay Bourgogne 2023

Few "entry-level" Bourgognes carry pedigree quite like this one. Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey was born from the union of two great Burgundian winemaking families: Pierre-Yves, eldest son of the celebrated Saint-Aubin producer Marc Colin, and his wife Caroline Morey, daughter of legendary Chassagne-Montrachet vigneron Jean-Marc Morey. After a decade as winemaker at his father's domaine, Pierre-Yves struck out on his own in the mid-2000s, and the estate — now based in Chassagne-Montrachet, with sons Mathis and Clément increasingly involved — has rapidly become recognised as one of the finest producers of white Burgundy working today. This Bourgogne Chardonnay is blended from four parcels spanning some of the most prestigious white-wine communes in the Côte de Beaune: Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet, and Saint-Aubin. It's made with exactly the same painstaking method as PYCM's grander bottlings — whole-bunch pressed, fermented on native yeasts, aged in larger 350-litre demi-muid barrels without any lees-stirring, then bottled unfined and unfiltered — just with a shorter élevage befitting its more modest classification.

The result is a Chardonnay that consistently over-delivers for a basic Bourgogne: bright acidity, stony minerality, and precise citrus and green apple fruit, with a subtle, well-judged touch of oak that never dominates. It shows real clarity and energy rather than richness for richness's sake, a hallmark of the Colin-Morey house style across every tier of the range. Pour it with shellfish, roast chicken, or a simple goat's cheese salad — this is village-adjacent pedigree hiding under Burgundy's most modest appellation, and one of the smartest ways into a domaine whose grander bottlings now command genuinely serious money.
