Paolo Scavino Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2005 1.5L
Paolo Scavino's winery was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto by Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo, and today the fourth generation, Enrico Scavino with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, runs about 30 hectares across the Barolo zone. Bric dël Fiasc is the estate's first single-vineyard Barolo and its signature, first made in 1978 when Enrico persuaded his father to vinify the best grapes from this site separately, making it one of the early crus in Barolo. The vineyard has been in the family since 1921. It is a 2.5-hectare, south-west-facing parcel at about 270 metres in the Fiasco cru, where the Tortonian and Helvetian soils cross, with marl and limestone on one side of the hill and sandy soil on the other, giving finesse and power together.
The result is a muscular, structured Barolo with real depth and a feral intensity. Red cherry, dark fruit, rose, violet, liquorice, balsamic herbs, clove, cinnamon, graphite and chalk are typical, over powerful but fine-grained tannins and a long, stony finish.
