Moreau-Naudet & Fils Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2023
Domaine Moreau-Naudet's roots in Chablis stretch back to the 17th century, with family ties running through Alfred Naudet, a key figure in the very definition of the Chablis AOC in 1929. The estate's modern reputation was built by Stéphane Moreau, who took over in 1993 and, alongside his wife Virginie, transformed what had been a small grower supplying négociants into one of the appellation's benchmark names — critics have called their wines "lifted, Dauvissat-style," genuinely among the finest in the new generation of Chablis producers. Following Stéphane's sudden death in 2016, on the eve of harvest, Virginie has carried the estate forward with trusted cellar master Coco, farming organically with hand-harvested fruit and indigenous yeast fermentation throughout. Montée de Tonnerre comes from a single one-hectare parcel of 50-year-old vines within the celebrated Chapelot lieu-dit, on sandy, rocky soil thick with Kimmeridgian limestone — consistently the most mineral-driven wine in the entire Moreau-Naudet range, aged roughly a third in old oak and the rest in temperature-controlled tank over 24 months.
The result is a genuine stunner, repeatedly praised by critics: beeswax, honeysuckle, and crisp orchard fruit open the nose, with gunflint developing progressively with air to reveal the Chapelot lieu-dit's unmistakable mineral signature. The palate is razor-sharp and high-toned, citrus-driven before crushed slate, salted cracker, and nectarine carry through a long, beautiful finish — La Revue du Vin de France scored the 2023 a "Coup de Cœur" 94 points, with Wine Advocate close behind at 92-94. It's a wine that genuinely rewards patience, needing at least five years in bottle and peaking around the decade mark.
