Jean-Francois Ganevat Cotes du Jura Cuvee Marguerite 2018
Jean-François Ganevat is one of the Jura's true legends — declared "Best Winemaker of 2018" by the Revue du Vin de France, and nicknamed by some the most Burgundian of all Jura winemakers, a reputation earned after a stint as cellar master for Jean-Marc Morey in Chassagne-Montrachet before returning to his family's vines in Rotalier in 1998. Working biodynamically since 2005 across nine hectares and 25 grape varieties, with old vines representing a third of the surface and massal selection the rule rather than the exception, Ganevat's parcel-by-parcel vinifications consistently reach the summit of what Jura whites can achieve. Cuvée Marguerite is perhaps the most singular of all his bottlings: made from vines planted mostly in 1876 on the famous Grands Teppes terroir of marl-limestone soils, it pays homage not just to a grape variety but to an entire peasant culture that understood and respected the force of nature. The grape itself is a rarity — a variety of Chardonnay locally known as Melon à Queue Rouge — vinified in stainless steel to preserve freshness and aromatic purity, then partly aged in old oak barrels without malolactic fermentation, conserving the wine's vivacity and precision while adding gentle aromatic complexity.
After more than three years of ageing, the wine affirms a beautiful balance between density and tension — leaning toward a Burgundian style, with fleshy, finely buttery fruit and a penetrating saline minerality, traversed by a laser-like tension that electrifies the palate. Plush flavours of juicy yellow fruit, baked apples, lemon zest and crushed rocks lead to a lasting finish. Classic Ganevat: light oxidation, intense minerality, great acidity.
