Geantet-Pansiot Gevrey-Chambertin 2010
Domaine Geantet-Pansiot was founded in 1954 when Edmond Geantet and Bernadette Pansiot combined their small holdings in the heart of Gevrey-Chambertin — just three hectares to start. His son Vincent joined in 1977, expanding the estate considerably, and in 2006 Vincent's own son Fabien came aboard, bringing the domaine into its third generation while staying rooted in the same natural, hands-off philosophy the family has always favoured: hand-harvesting, cold maceration, and fermentation on indigenous yeasts across all thirteen hectares, which today also extend into Premier Cru holdings and even a slice of Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru. This Vieilles Vignes bottling draws on vines averaging around sixty to seventy-five years old, scattered across plots throughout the village and neighbouring Brochon, some planted as far back as the 1920s — genuinely old-vine concentration blended into what is technically still a "village" wine. The fruit is cold-macerated for five to ten days before natural fermentation, then aged around fourteen months in French oak with roughly 30% new wood.
The result punches well above its village classification: deep aromas of blackberry and black cherry meet sweet spice and a touch of forest floor, with critics repeatedly noting the classic Gevrey earthy, briary, leathery character balancing the wine's dark fruit. The palate is rich and fleshy, with a well-defined tannic structure and a persistent, complex finish that belies real cellaring potential — one recent reviewer called it "bold without being overdone." It's a wine built for real food: pheasant or venison with a morel or wild mushroom sauce, roast duck, or braised beef would all do it justice. This is old-vine Gevrey-Chambertin at genuinely compelling value, from a family whose reputation has quietly grown well beyond Burgundy's borders.
