Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru Clos des Myglands 2022
Faiveley has been rooted in Burgundy for seven generations since the family's founding in 1825, today the largest family-owned domaine in the region and the holder of more monopoles — single-owner vineyards — than any other estate in Burgundy. Clos des Myglands is one of the finest, a 6.31-hectare walled parcel that most likely takes its curious name from the English "My Land," bestowed by an English dignitary centuries ago. It sits at the far north-eastern edge of Mercurey, on clay-limestone soil rich in iron with few pebbles, resting on deep ground — a site that consistently produces a slightly rustic, raw-edged style, silky yet warm, distinct from the more polished character of the domaine's other Mercurey holdings. As with the rest of the range, the fruit is hand-harvested and sorted, with the proportion of whole clusters versus destemmed grapes shifting by vintage, pumped over twice daily through a fifteen-to-nineteen-day vatting, with the free-run wine drawn off by gravity and the marc pressed slowly and gently to preserve purity. The wine is then aged fifteen months in French oak, 30% new.
The result is powerful, direct, and well-balanced, exactly as the estate itself describes it: black and red fruits meet subtle woody, smoky notes on the nose, carrying through to a full-bodied palate with a velvety, tannic backbone that gives real warmth on the finish.
