Fabien Duveau Saumur-Champigny Les Bas Poyeux 2022 1.5L
Les Poyeux is one of the most storied vineyards in all of Saumur-Champigny — the very site that made neighbouring Clos Rougeard's reputation, right down the street from Fabien Duveau's own fourteenth-century cellar in Chacé. Rather than bottling the whole parcel as one wine, as Clos Rougeard always did, Fabien is the first to draw a distinction between its upper and lower halves, farming and vinifying each separately to let their different characters show through. Bas Poyeux is, counterintuitively, the shallower of the two — just 20 centimetres of sandy soil over clay and limestone, letting the underlying rock shine through in the finished wine — from vines planted in 1960. The fruit is entirely destemmed and fermented with indigenous yeast, free-run and press juice kept separate, with no sulphur used during élevage beyond a small, careful dose at bottling; the wine is aged around ten months split evenly between concrete tank and barrel, a combination chosen specifically to draw out this site's depth and complexity.
The result is more serious and structured than you might expect from such shallow topsoil: blackcurrant and ripe red fruit meet real fleshiness and perfume, with a full, fruity palate carried by smooth, velvety tannins and a balancing spine of acidity. It gives real immediate pleasure while still showing genuine depth and complexity — critics have praised its "succulent-savoury fruit" and structural finesse, a wine that drinks beautifully young yet rewards a little patience too.
