Elio Altare Barolo Unoperuno 2021

Regular price $845.00

UnoPerUno's origin story is pure serendipity. In a notoriously poor 1986 vintage, hail and rain had damaged most of the family's Barbera, so Elio Altare hand-destemmed the surviving bunches berry by berry to salvage only the healthiest fruit — producing just two barriques, 600 bottles, of what became the legendary Larigi 1986. The wine sat largely forgotten in the family cellar for over two decades, until a 2010 family lunch, when Elio opened a bottle and was stunned by how extraordinary it had become. On a near-perfect Nebbiolo harvest that same year, the family decided to try the same painstaking technique on their historic Arborina vineyard, planted by grandfather Giovanni in 1948 — twenty-six days of hand-destemming on top of regular twenty-hour harvest shifts produced just three barriques, 900 bottles, and UnoPerUno ("one by one") was born. Elio Altare himself is the man widely credited with inventing modern Barolo — after a 1976 trip to Burgundy, he famously took a chainsaw to his father's old casks, pioneering shorter macerations, barrique ageing, and the softer, more approachable style that reshaped the entire appellation. Today his daughter Silvia runs the estate, and UnoPerUno has evolved from a single-vineyard wine into what she calls a "super mega blend of classic single-vineyard sites" — Cannubi, Arborina, Cerretta, Pernanno, Sarmassa, and Bricco Ambrogio, destemmed one grape at a time with no stems, leaves, or imperfect berries anywhere near the fermentation. Production remains tiny, around 1,200 bottles a year.

The result is silky, generous, and remarkably polished: blood orange, star anise, and cinnamon lift an ethereal, exotic nose, with cherry, iron, and wet hay on the palate, framed by impressively textured, firm tannins and a lingering finish.
