Domaine Verset A & E Cornas 2020

In Cornas, the name Verset carries weight almost as heavy as the appellation's granite soils. For decades, Noël Verset (1919–2015) was the benchmark producer who single-handedly put this once-overlooked village on the map, making "country wines" that turned out to be extraordinary. When he retired in 2006 with no direct heirs, his vines were dispersed among family and colleagues — his nephew Alain inherited the Champelrose parcels, while further vines in the celebrated Les Mazards and La Geynale lieux-dits, some over a century old, came down through Alain's father Louis, Noël's brother. Alain made wine under his own name for years before handing the domaine to his daughter Emmanuelle in 2016, at just 24 — the sixth generation of Versets to work in Cornas, and one of only two women currently running a domaine in the appellation. She renamed the estate A&E Verset in tribute to the handover, and has since quietly transformed it: converting the vines to organic farming, seeding cover crops, building a new cellar with temperature control, and introducing a pneumatic press — modernising the winemaking while keeping the rustic, terroir-first soul intact. Today the domaine works five lieux-dits — Les Mazards, Champelrose, La Côte, Les Côtes, and a small slice of Reynard — arguably one of the finest, still-underrated collections of old-vine terroir anywhere in Cornas. The wine ferments 100% whole-cluster and ages entirely in used oak, with no new wood.

The result speaks clearly of that granite and slate terroir: ripe black cherry, cedar, and graphite meet earthy, dark spice and peppery power, framed by firm, ripe tannins and real mineral sinew.
