Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs 2022

Clos des Ducs is the crown jewel of the entire d'Angerville estate — a tiny 2.15-hectare monopole enclosed by stone walls on every side, its boundaries unchanged since documentation from the 16th century, acquired by the family in 1804 and never shared with another owner since. It sits at the highest elevation in all of Volnay, on a steep, southeast-facing slope of strongly calcareous, stony, clay-rich soil laced with white marl — terroir that Rare Wine Co. has called capable of "grand cru intensity" despite its official Premier Cru classification. Guillaume d'Angerville, sixth generation, took over the estate in 2003 and converted it fully to biodynamic farming by 2009, with his daughter Margaux joining in 2024. The winemaking philosophy here traces back to Guillaume's father Jacques, who summed up his approach to Allen Meadows simply: "I want to do as little as possible to the wine. I want low yields and no signature." In practice that means complete destemming, a cold maceration, ten to twelve days of fermentation with twice-daily pump-overs to gently extract fine tannin, and twelve to eighteen months in largely used barrels with just 20% new oak.

The result is consistently the most serious, structured wine in the entire d'Angerville range — Burghound and Vinous have both scored recent vintages 95 points, describing it as more introverted and backward than sibling climats like Champans or Taillepieds, needing real cellar time before it fully opens. Expect dark berries, cassis, and cherry mingled with orange rind, violets, cinnamon, and clove, deepening with age into an intoxicating, mineral perfume of rose petal, redcurrant, sea cave, and light loamy earth. The palate is medium-to-full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, with fine, powdery tannins and tangy acidity carrying an exceptionally long, compact, beautifully balanced finish.
