Domaine Gramenon Cotes du Rhone La Sagesse 2020

Regular price $110.00

La Sagesse — "wisdom" — is arguably Domaine Gramenon's most complete statement of old-vine Grenache, blended from three distinct parcels around the family's home in Montbrison-sur-Lez: two on a limestone plateau at 350 metres, the third on a sandier southern slope. Each contributes something different — the sandy parcel brings lively floral aromatics and elegant fruit, the clay lends depth and fleshiness, and the rocky limestone plot gives the wine its tightly wound, almost salty finish — coming together into what Kermit Lynch has called "a masterpiece of old-vine Grenache." The vines here run 50 to 70 years old, planted via massale selection and farmed under strict Demeter-certified biodynamic principles at low yields of around 25 hectolitres per hectare, on soil built from ancient, shell-rich coastal sandstone laid down some twelve million years ago. As with the rest of the Gramenon range, it's made with real restraint — natural fermentation, minimal sulphur, unfined and unfiltered — letting Michèle Aubéry-Laurent's reputation as one of her generation's most gifted growers speak for itself.

The result is hedonistic yet remarkably refined: violets, ripe berry, cherry, and musk lead on the nose, opening onto a fleshy, full palate with real fruit intensity, sweet tannins, and layers of blue-to-red berry, rose petal, garrigue, and olive tapenade. It's been described as graceful and lively rather than heavy — silky, chiffon-like, and dangerously drinkable, even while carrying real structural depth.
