Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Chambolle-Musigny 2018
Few names in Burgundy carry more quiet authority than Roumier. The domaine was born in 1924, when Georges Roumier — a man from the Charolais — married a local Chambolle-Musigny girl, Geneviève Quanquin, whose family dowry came in the form of vineyards, including holdings that would later become part of Les Cras, Les Amoureuses, and Bonnes-Mares. Georges spent years also managing the vineyards for the neighbouring Comte Georges de Vogüé, a role that only deepened his understanding of the village's terroir. The estate passed to his son Jean-Marie in 1965, and then to grandson Christophe, who — alongside his sister Delphine — has spent decades building "Georges Roumier" into one of the most revered names in all of Burgundy, prized for a style that marries precision with an almost effortless sense of elegance. This village-level Chambolle-Musigny is a blend drawn from several parcels across the appellation, made with the same exacting hand applied to the domaine's legendary Grand and Premier Crus: a cold soak before spontaneous fermentation in a mix of stainless steel and open-top concrete vats, and around a third new oak through élevage. Christophe himself has noted the wines can show a little firm and closed in youth — but come round admirably with time.
The result captures everything Chambolle-Musigny is famous for: pure aromas of violet, dark cherry, and damp earth, wrapped in a velvety, supple texture with an abundance of black and red berry fruit, finishing with real finesse and length for a village wine. Recent vintages have been described by collectors as "Village at its finest" — meaty, polished, sweet purple fruit with genuine drinkability even relatively young. It's approachable within a few years of release, yet carries enough structure to reward further patience in the cellar- this is about as close as most drinkers will ever get to tasting the Roumier magic without chasing down (or paying for) Bonnes-Mares or Musigny itself, from an estate that has quietly defined Chambolle-Musigny for a full century.
