Domaine Denis Bachelet Charmes-Chambertin 2023

Regular price $1,600.00

Denis Bachelet makes only one Grand Cru, and it happens to occupy the best real estate within one of Burgundy's most variable — and, at its finest, most seductive — grand cru vineyards. His 0.4-hectare holding sits in the very heart of "Aux Charmes," the prized inner section of Charmes-Chambertin, on a gentle, east-facing slope lower than its grand cru neighbours, where a bed of white mother-chalk lies just beneath the surface. The vines here were planted between 1907 and 1917 — genuinely centenarian — and that chalk bedrock consistently pushes the fruit to ripen, and finish malolactic, earlier than anywhere else in Bachelet's range. Production is vanishingly small, sometimes as few as five or six barrels in a vintage, aged fifteen to eighteen months with the highest proportion of new oak in the domaine's range (typically 30–60%), unfined and unfiltered, and bottled entirely by hand.

The result is routinely ranked among the finest examples of Charmes-Chambertin made by anyone, and it's easy to see why: wild cherry, rose petal, and peony sit alongside black truffle, exotic spice, blood orange, and a whisper of caramel and cardamom, all wrapped around a core of loamy, earthy depth. The palate is silken, layered, and multidimensional — full-bodied yet lifted, with ripe, powdery tannins, lively acidity, and a long, perfumed finish that Bachelet himself has ranked among the finest wines of his career in exceptional vintages. This is a wine built for decades in the cellar, best reserved for roast squab or pigeon with morels, venison, or a properly aged Époisses. Vanishingly rare and fiercely allocated, it's the single grand cru that proves Denis Bachelet's quiet, humble reputation is entirely earned.
