Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Bourgogne Hautes-Cotes de Nuits 2021
Amélie Berthaut, universally recognized as one of the most talented young winemakers in the Côte d'Or, crafts this cuvée from high-altitude vineyards perched on the hillsides above the famous villages of Fixin and Vosne-Romanée. Historically considered marginal, these limestone-rich plateaus now benefit immensely from warmer growing seasons, allowing the grapes to achieve optimal phenolic ripeness while retaining a thrilling, electric freshness. Amélie farms these sites with meticulous care, prioritizing soil health and low yields. In the cellar, the winemaking is exceptionally precise and thoughtful: the fruit undergoes a gentle fermentation with native wild yeasts, incorporating a judicious percentage of whole bunches for aromatic lift, followed by aging in a combination of concrete vats and seasoned French oak barrels to ensure the wood never masks the wine's pure, terroir-driven energy.
In the glass, it reveals a bright, translucent ruby-red hue with shimmering violet glints. The nose is instantly expressive and high-toned, unlocking a vibrant bouquet of crunchy red currants, wild strawberries, and sour red cherries, beautifully laced with delicate nuances of white pepper, blood orange pith, and fresh violet pastilles. On the palate, the wine delivers an absolute masterclass in tension, freshness, and structural transparency. A lean, energetic core of juicy red berries completely enlivens the mouth, effortlessly supported by an ultra-fine, chalky framework of youthfully taut tannins and a razor-sharp line of limestone-driven acidity. The high-altitude terroir makes its presence felt through a deeply tactile, mineral weight and a persistent, mouth-watering salinity that sweeps across the back palate. It finishes completely clean, bone-dry, and remarkably refreshing, leaving behind a lingering trail of crushed stones and red fruit skin.
