Domaine Bernard Gripa St. Joseph Parady 2021

Regular price $148.00

Sourced from a unique, 1.2-hectare single vineyard located in the historical lieu-dit of "Le Paradis" in Mauves—the central cradle of the appellation—this 100% Syrah thrives on incredibly steep, terraced slopes directly facing the hill of Hermitage. The vines, planted around 2001, are anchored in a localized topsoil of highly decomposed, stony "Granite de Tournon," a soil profile renowned for imparting energy and structural tension rather than heavy brawn. Given the sheer verticality of the terrain, the low-yielding vines are tended and harvested entirely by hand. In the cellar, Gripa employs traditional methods with a modern eye for refinement: the fruit is carefully destemmed (retaining roughly 10% whole bunches for aromatic complexity) and fermented with indigenous wild yeasts in open vats before a patient, 24-month aging period in seasoned 228-liter French oak barrels.

In the glass, it reveals a dense, glass-staining ruby-purple hue with brilliant clarity. The bouquet is remarkably expressive, opening with a vibrant wave of wild blackberries, sour cherry compote, and dark plums, beautifully complemented by signature Northern Rhône undertones of cracked black pepper, floral violet pastilles, and pipe tobacco, all underscored by a distinct element of smoky, mineral-tinged reduction. On the palate, the wine is chewy, energetic, and highly focused, offering a concentrated core of crunchy dark berries that seamlessly coats the mouth. This concentrated volume is structurally balanced by a precise spine of juicy natural acidity and a firm yet beautifully polished network of youthfully solid tannins. The decomposed granite terroir makes its presence felt on the mid-palate, introducing a deep mineral weight and a clean, driving salinity. It finishes with an impressively long, spicy crescendo, leaving behind an elegant trail of wild thyme, savory dark spice, and crushed stone. Possessing the structure to cellar beautifully over the next 10 to 15 years, it pairs flawlessly with grilled lamb chops, rosemary-infused duck breast, or a rich wild mushroom ragù.
