Domaine Belargus Anjou Blanc Clos des Bonnes Blanches 2020

Regular price $225.00

Established in 2018 by visionary Ivan Massonnat after acquiring the legendary vineyards of Jo Pithon, Domaine Belargus is 100% dedicated to Chenin Blanc, utilizing a single-plot (parcellaire) philosophy directly inspired by the grand crus of Burgundy. The iconic 'Clos des Bonnes Blanches' is a tiny, 0.57-hectare historical plot located in the village of Saint-Lambert du Lattay. Perched on a gentle, cool, north-facing slope, this late-ripening terroir features an exceptional soil profile of talc-schist (shale) layered with heavy clay and white quartz stones. Farmed under strict biodynamic principles with remarkably low yields, the hand-picked fruit undergoes a slow, spontaneous fermentation driven by indigenous yeasts in French oak barrels. Left to mature patiently on its fine lees with minimal intervention, this dry Anjou is built to offer a pure, unmanipulated snapshot of a cool, mineral-rich microclimate.

In the glass, it presents a pale, luminous gold hue with delicate greenish reflections at the rim. The nose is wonderfully complex and introverted, completely avoiding simple fruit profiles to slowly reveal a nuanced bouquet of bruised yellow orchard fruits, quince, and fresh grapefruit pith, intricately woven with herbal notes of wild mint, fennel, chamomile, and a rich undertone of lanolin and smoky barrel reduction. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in structural tension and refined texture. The entry is broad, dense, and beautifully cohesive—coating the palate with a silken, slightly waxy mouthfeel—before being driven vertically by a vibrant, limestone-sharp spine of natural acidity. The unique combination of talc-schist and quartz lends a profound, chalky mineral weight and a mouth-watering salinity that builds toward the back palate. It finishes completely bone-dry and remarkably persistent, leaving a lingering, echoing trail of citrus peel, subtle, structured phenolics, and a clean, smoky-mineral grip.
