Castello di Neive Barbaresco Riserva Albesani Santo Stefano 2019 1.5L

Regular price $525.00

Santo Stefano is one of the most celebrated single vineyards in all of Barbaresco — recognised as a distinct site for almost 300 years, with a privileged south-to-southwest exposure on the Albesani hill in Neive, cooled by the nearby Tanaro river. Castello di Neive has held its parcels here since 1964, once supplying fruit under long-term contract to the legendary Bruno Giacosa alongside bottling its own version in parallel. The Riserva represents the estate's most ambitious reading of the site — made only in the finest vintages, from 100% Nebbiolo fermented twelve to fourteen days in stainless steel, then held back significantly longer than the standard bottling, matured twelve to eighteen months in French oak before extensive further bottle age prior to release. It's a wine built to showcase exactly how much depth this terroir can carry when given the time to properly unfold.

The result is medium garnet with reddish-brown reflections, carrying intense aromas of black cherry, dried rose, liquorice, and potpourri, with critics across vintages noting balsamic, mature rose, tobacco leaf, and camphor developing alongside black cherry and red berry fruit. The palate is powerful and brooding yet refined, with velvety, well-integrated tannins that never sacrifice the wine's genuine age-worthiness — Wine Enthusiast has scored recent vintages as high as 93 points, and reviewers consistently note these wines reward real patience, often needing another decade or more in the cellar to reach full integration.
