Brokenwood Shiraz Graveyard 2014 1.5L
Few Australian reds carry the weight of history quite like Graveyard. The vineyard was planted in 1968 and acquired by Brokenwood in 1978, when six new partners joined the fledgling estate specifically to fund its purchase — its evocative name drawn from the site's old designation as the "Cemetery Block" on the Pokolbin parish map, despite never actually having served that purpose. The first single-vineyard bottling came in 1983, and the wine has been made virtually every year since, now over forty vintages deep, celebrated each year at the estate's much-loved Graveyard Launch Luncheon. Its reputation has only grown with time: Graveyard sits in the top tier of the Langton's Classification of Australian Wine, alongside Penfolds Grange, Henschke Hill of Grace, Mount Mary Quintet, and Wendouree Shiraz — the only wine from New South Wales, and the only Hunter Valley Shiraz, to earn that company. The heavy clay soils here are notoriously difficult to work, but they yield fruit of real distinction; in the cellar, the wine sees a three-day cold soak, four to five days of fermentation at 24–26°C, and maturation entirely in French oak, with the estate's approach in recent vintages leaning toward little to no new wood — a deliberate return to the vineyard's own, more transparent voice.
The result is dense, serious Shiraz built for the long haul: young vintages show dark bramble berry, spice, flint, and graphite, evolving over decades into mulberry, dark plum, tobacco leaf, and a soft, silky, almost ethereal texture that critics have repeatedly called some of the finest Hunter red ever made — the 1986 vintage remains a benchmark still spoken of in the same breath as Lindeman's legendary 1965 Twin Bins. It's a wine of real poise and grace rather than sheer power, deceptively light on its feet given its depth of flavour.
