Bindi Chardonnay Quartz 2013

If Kostas Rind is Bindi's tribute wine, Quartz is its purest expression of place. Sourced from a tiny 1.2-acre section of the original 1988 plantings — specifically where the quartz content in the soil runs highest — this cuvée has been called a genuine forebear of the taut, mineral-driven style that now defines contemporary Australian Chardonnay, and unlike many wines that chased that style to an austere extreme, Quartz has never sacrificed flavour for tension. The vineyard sits at around 500 metres on Mount Gisborne's slopes, on a rare mix of shattered quartz and eroded volcanic topsoil over sandstone and clay, farmed organically with fermentation relying entirely on native yeast — no cultured yeast, nutrients, or enzyme additions anywhere in the process. Winemaker Michael Dhillon, who took over from mentor Stuart Anderson in 1998, brings genuine international pedigree to the wine: vintages spent with the Champagne house Jean Vesselle in Bouzy, alongside Alain Graillot in Crozes-Hermitage, and four seasons in Tuscany at Tenuta di Valgiano, layered onto more than two decades of Burgundy pilgrimage. Production is minuscule, often as little as 200 cases, aged eleven months in French barrique with new oak kept to around a third.

The result is exactly what "somewhereness" is supposed to taste like: a fresh, mineral, citrus-and-toast nose gives way to a palate that's intense, taut, and profoundly focused, streaked with flint, spice, and a faint matchstick reduction, all held together by remarkable acid structure and tensile length. Critics have repeatedly scored it in the mid-90s to high-90s — Halliday, The Wine Front, and James Suckling among them — and it's built to reward real cellaring alongside its immediate precision. Pour it with roast chicken, fresh oysters, or a rich seafood risotto; this is single-block Chardonnay at its most uncompromising, from one of the coldest and most quietly exceptional corners of Australian wine.
