Bethany holds a genuinely unique place in Australian wine history: founded in 1842 by German immigrants from Silesia, it was the very first European settlement in the Barossa Valley. Johann Schrapel planted the estate's first vines a decade later, in 1852, and seven generations on, the Schrapel family is still farming this same historic ground — Bethany Wines itself was established in 1981 by fifth-generation growers Geoff and Robert Schrapel, and the family now tends 38 hectares across five vineyards in the Barossa. The First Village label is a direct tribute to that founding story, its artwork drawn in the style of Scherenschnitte, the traditional German folk art of paper cutting the settlers brought with them. The Shiraz fruit is sourced from vineyards in the foothills of the Barossa Ranges, where cooling sea breezes help retain fresh aromatics and acidity through the valley's hot summers — a cooler-climate influence that gives the wine noticeably more lift and freshness than the typical baked, jammy Barossa stereotype.

In the glass it's deep black-purple, with a lifted nose of black cherry pie, fresh dark berries, and a distinctive note of clean pencil shavings and graphite. The palate is complex and layered — dark cherry stone, satsuma plum, and violets, framed by dark chocolate tannins and a real streak of stony minerality running beneath the plush fruit. Silky, fine-grained tannins carry the wine to a long, fresh finish, giving it real power without tipping into heaviness. Pour it with a peppered rib-eye, slow-braised lamb shoulder, or a rich beef stew — this is Barossa Shiraz with genuine sense of place, from the valley's very first vineyard family.
