Bernard Dugat-Py Charmes-Chambertin 2008
Domaine Dugat-Py's roots in Gevrey-Chambertin run back a century, to Fernand Dugat's founding of the estate in 1923, though it was Bernard Dugat's first vintage in 1975 — and his marriage to Jocelyne Py in 1979 — that set the domaine on its modern course; the name changed to Dugat-Py in 1994 specifically to distinguish it from Bernard's equally celebrated cousin, Claude Dugat. Today the estate is run by Bernard, Jocelyne, and their son Loïc, farming fourteen hectares fully organically and biodynamically, with wines aged in the domaine's extraordinary nearly thousand-year-old cellars beneath the old Aumônerie de Gevrey-Chambertin. Their Charmes-Chambertin comes from several small parcels of vines ranging from fifty to ninety years old, blended roughly two-thirds Charmes proper with a third of neighbouring Mazoyères-Chambertin — permitted to be sold under the more famous name, and included here because the adjoining Mazoyères parcel shares such similar terroir with the Dugat-Py Charmes holdings that Loïc vinifies them together. It's a hallmark of the domaine's traditional, low-intervention philosophy: minimal manipulation, natural composts, and a refusal to chase easy polish over honest expression of place.
The result is regularly ranked among the finest Charmes-Chambertin made by anyone: dark cherries, liquorice, peonies, and sweet spice meet a deft touch of new oak, unfurling into a full-bodied, satiny wine that's fleshy and gourmand on the surface yet carries real underlying structure and complexity. Depending on the vintage's Mazoyères influence, expect a more rustic, "Gevrey-esque" edge — tea leaves, forest floor, mushroom — layered beneath wild strawberry, black cherry, and firm, mineral-driven tannins built for the long haul; critics have repeatedly scored recent vintages 95–96 points, with drinking windows stretching two, three, even four decades. Pour it with venison, squab, or a well-aged Époisses, and give it real time — this is a Grand Cru built for patience, from one of Gevrey-Chambertin's most quietly revered family names.
