Benjamin Leroux Saint-Romain Sous le Chateau Blanc 2020

Regular price $121.00

Saint-Romain is one of Burgundy's most overlooked appellations, and Sous le Château shows exactly why Benjamin Leroux keeps returning to sites others pass over. The 1.12-hectare parcel sits high on the hillside, on rocky limestone soils right below where the village's medieval château once stood — a cool, elevated site with vines ranging from thirty to nearly a century old, farmed organically though not formally certified. The fruit is whole-cluster pressed and settled before fermenting on indigenous yeasts, then aged around twelve months in a considered split between old foudres and smaller barrels, with only a light touch of new oak. It's a hallmark of Leroux's whole approach: a producer once dubbed the "spiritual heir to Henri Jayer" by Burghound, who has drawn admiration from the likes of Anne-Claude Leflaive, Dominique Lafon, and Pierre Morey, applying that same painstaking attention to a village most wine drinkers have never heard of.

The result is vivid, energetic Chardonnay that consistently over-delivers: green apple, grapefruit, and white peach mingle with linden blossom and a subtle, struck-match reduction, occasionally lifted by ginger or blackcurrant leaf. The palate is medium-bodied with a waxy, almost creamy texture, tangy citrus-driven acidity, and a long, saline, mineral finish that critics repeatedly flag as remarkable depth for the appellation.
