Bell Hill Pinot Noir 2015

Regular price $440.00

Bell Hill's flagship Pinot Noir is the wine that put this tiny North Canterbury project on the map worldwide. Grown on the same close-planted, lime-rich hillside — a former limestone quarry in the Weka Pass, farmed by "winegrowers" Marcel Giesen and Sherwyn Veldhuizen with an almost obsessive attention to detail — this is the top selection from the estate's best blocks, made with a significant portion of whole-bunch fermentation and a generous proportion of new French oak. True to the philosophy behind the whole range, Bell Hill deliberately favours savoury, earthy, dried-herb complexity over upfront fruit sweetness, and the tannin structure here is built to evolve slowly rather than show everything at once — which is exactly why the estate holds the wine back an extra year in bottle before release, letting its structure soften and its full character emerge.

The result is consistently ranked among New Zealand's very finest reds: red and dark cherry, wild rose, and violet mingle with spice, anise, and a distinctive chalky, mineral thread that speaks unmistakably of the limestone beneath the vines. The palate is poised and tense on release, layered with fine, persistent acidity and a long, structured finish — critics have repeatedly awarded vintages in the high-90s, with real cellaring potential stretching a decade or more. This is a wine of genuine subtlety and power rather than immediate charm; give it time in the glass, or better still, in the cellar.
