Bell Hill Chardonnay 2019
Bell Hill is less a winery than a decades-long love letter to a single, improbable patch of ground. In 1995, Marcel Giesen — from the family behind one of Marlborough's pioneering wine estates — and Sherwyn Veldhuizen, who studied winemaking at Lincoln University, found a lime-rich hillside in the Weka Pass area of North Canterbury: a former limestone quarry they were convinced could grow world-class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. They call themselves "winegrowers" rather than winemakers, and the distinction matters — Bell Hill is a close-planted, meticulously farmed site where every decision is made in service of expressing the limestone beneath the vines. The Chardonnay blends fruit from several key parcels across the property (Shelf, Roadblock, and Limeworks among them), crushed before pressing and aged around twelve months in predominantly one-to-three-year-old French oak, followed by a further seven months in tank before bottling. Production is tiny and demand vastly outstrips supply — Bell Hill has held near-mythical, allocation-only status among serious collectors for years.
The results consistently rank among the finest Chardonnays New Zealand has ever produced: James Suckling has scored recent vintages 98 points, Decanter 97, both citing electrifying purity and precision. Expect honeysuckle, sliced apple, and acacia blossom on the nose, layered with crushed stone, light vanilla, and a savoury meringue note, opening onto a medium-bodied, taut palate driven by tangy, racy acidity and a mineral finish that turns to Meyer lemon and lime. It's flinty, precise, and endlessly evolving in the glass, with the structure to develop beautifully for a decade or more.
