Few hillsides in the Loire carry the pedigree of Brézé. In centuries past, its whites were traded annually alongside Château d'Yquem as one of France's most prized wines — yet today, out of 400 hectares of vineyard, only four producers still bottle wine under the Brézé name, the rest lost to bulk cooperative blending. Arnaud Lambert is the man leading its revival, farming 20 hectares here (alongside another 20 at neighbouring Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg, inherited from his father Yves's Domaine Saint-Just) with an unwavering, minimal-intervention focus on letting each individual parcel speak for itself. Clos David is his most celebrated monopole: a tiny 1.3-hectare, north-east-facing plot of Chenin Blanc planted in 1965 on sandy silt over Brézé's famous tuffeau limestone. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented naturally, split between old foudre and barrel, matured on fine lees for a year before further ageing in tank, and bottled unfined and unfiltered.

The result is Chenin of genuine Grand Cru ambition — fresh, leafy, and citrus-laced on release, with beeswax, green-gold apple, and delicate floral top notes giving way to a full-bodied, vital palate carried by a persistently salty, chalky minerality and grippy, vibrant acidity. It's a wine that rewards real patience: tight and mineral-driven young, it expands and softens beautifully over five to ten years, unfurling into something that regularly draws comparisons to great white Burgundy.
