Ata Rangi Pinot Noir 2019 375ml

Few wine origin stories are as improbable, or as celebrated, as Ata Rangi's. In 1980, dairy farmer Clive Paton sold his herd and planted Pinot Noir on a bare, stony sheep paddock at the edge of the tiny township of Martinborough — a region nobody had yet proven could make serious wine. He was one of a handful of pioneers taking the same gamble that year, alongside Dry River and Martinborough Vineyard, and part of his early success traces to a single stroke of luck: budwood from Malcolm Abel's Auckland vineyard, cuttings rumoured to have been smuggled out of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti in a gumboot decades earlier. That "Abel clone" became the backbone of Ata Rangi's plantings and, in time, one of New Zealand's most important Pinot Noir clones. Today the estate is still family-run — Clive, his wife Phyll Pattie, and sister Alison Paton — with winemaking led since the early 2000s by Helen Masters, whose tenure has been widely credited with sharpening the house style toward elegance and site transparency. In 2010, Ata Rangi and Felton Road became the only two New Zealand producers ever awarded "Tipuranga Teitei o Aotearoa" — Grand Cru of New Zealand.

Farmed organically across roughly 32 hectares of free-draining alluvial gravels on the Martinborough Terrace, with vines now approaching half a century old on some of the original blocks, the fruit here consistently produces Pinot Noir of real depth and structure — more savoury weight than most New Zealand examples, closer in spirit to serious Burgundy than to the fruit-forward New World style. Expect plush red and dark fruit, fine, velvety tannins, and a textural, seamlessly balanced palate built for both immediate enjoyment and genuine cellaring.
