Domaine Bernard Gripa St. Joseph Blanc Cuvee Le Berceau 2021

Regular price $140.00

Domaine Bernard Gripa Saint-Joseph Blanc 'Cuvée Le Berceau' is a monumental, profoundly complex white wine that stands as one of the absolute pinnacles of the northern Rhône Valley. The name translates to "The Cradle," paying homage to the fact that this rare bottling is sourced entirely from the estate's oldest Marsanne vines—some exceeding 60 to 80 years of age—planted on the iconic, nearly vertical granite hillside that marks the historical birthplace of the Saint-Joseph appellation. Fabrice Gripa manages these ancient, low-yielding vines with meticulous hands-on care, as the steep, terraced granite amphitheater forbids any mechanized farming. In the cellar, 'Le Berceau' receives a highly traditional, elite architectural treatment: the hand-selected fruit is gently pressed and fermented spontaneously using native wild yeasts in seasoned French oak demi-muids, followed by a patient 12-month maturation on its total fine lees. This minimal-intervention process yields an extraordinarily concentrated, structured masterpiece built to challenge the finest Grand Crus of Burgundy.

In the glass, it pours a rich, shimmering straw-gold color with brilliant topaz reflections. The nose is a dizzying, multi-layered tour de force, opening with a highly sophisticated and evolving bouquet of baked yellow quinces, bruised pears, and white peach, seamlessly interwoven with intricate undertones of fresh honeycomb, toasted hazelnuts, acacia blossoms, and an intense, smoky gunflint reduction. On the palate, the wine delivers an absolute masterclass in weightless density, displaying an incredibly oily, viscous, and mouth-coating texture that completely saturates the senses. This opulent, luxurious core of dry honeyed pit fruits is effortlessly counterbalanced by a surprisingly vibrant line of natural acidity and a noble, tightly woven phenolic bitterness that provides remarkable vertical drive. The ancient granite bedrock asserts itself on the back palate through a profound, chalky mineral weight and a persistent wave of smoky, flinty salinity that leaves the mouth watering. It concludes with a virtually eternal, bone-dry finish of candied citrus rind and liquid stone.
