Domaine Belargus Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru Les Roueres 2018 375ml
While proprietor Ivan Massonnat famously uses a portion of this historic 2.96-hectare plot to craft a revolutionary dry wine, it is in select vintages—when noble rot (botrytis cinerea) blankets the vineyard perfectly—that he permits a tiny fraction of the fruit to concentrate into this sweet Grand Cru masterpiece. The east-facing vineyard is defined by its incredibly thin topsoil sitting directly on a solid bedrock of warm puddingstone conglomerate. This specific rock formation acts as a solar radiator, absorbing heat during the day and warming the low-yielding, biodynamically farmed vines overnight. This unique microclimate yields ultra-concentrated berries that balance phenomenal sugar levels with a profound, structural depth.
In the glass, it displays a radiant, deep honey-gold color with rich, slow-moving tears. The nose is incredibly explosive and multi-dimensional, unveiling a decadent bouquet of dried apricots, baked figs, and crystallised ginger, seamlessly layered with complex undertones of fresh honeycomb, white truffle, saffron, and a distinct smoky reduction. On the palate, the wine is immensely unctuous, thick, and luxurious, completely coating the mouth with a wave of rich tropical fruit and marmalade sweetness. However, any potential heaviness is instantly shattered by a heroic, laser-sharp spine of volcanic mineral acidity that slices clean through the mid-palate. What truly sets 'Les Rouères' apart is its phenomenal structural grip; a noble phenolic framework introduces a complex, structural tension and a mouth-watering salinity that counterbalances the luscious residual sugar. It concludes with an eternal, deeply refreshing finish of candied citrus pith and crushed stone.
