Domaine Belargus Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru Les Quarts 2018

Regular price $208.00

Domaine Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru 'Les Quarts' is a monumental, breathtakingly complex sweet wine that represents the absolute pinnacle of botrytized Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley’s only official Grand Cru site. This flagship bottling comes from the historical heart of the appellation—a magnificent, south-facing volcanic amphitheater that sits high above the morning mists of the Layon River. Visionary proprietor Ivan Massonnat isolates this prized 3.12-hectare plot, defined by a unique matrix of ancient puddingstone gravels, sandy clay, and a deep bedrock of blue schist. The old vines are tended under strict certified biodynamic practices with microscopic yields, allowing noble rot (botrytis cinerea) to naturally shrivel the grapes and concentrate their sugars, acids, and flavors. Fermented slowly with indigenous wild yeasts and aged for several years in seasoned French oak barrels, this rare elixir completely avoids heavy, cloying sweetness, achieving a miraculous balance of raw power and architectural precision.

In the glass, it pours a magnificent, luminous deep amber-gold color with viscous, heavy legs. The nose is a dizzying, multi-layered tour de force, exploding with an intoxicating bouquet of candied apricot, dried mango, and warm orange marmalade, seamlessly interwoven with complex signatures of fresh honeycomb, saffron, ginger root, and a subtle hint of black tea leaf. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in structural contrast, feeling incredibly dense, unctuous, and velvety, yet completely weightless. An explosive wave of unctuous tropical and pit fruits completely coats the mouth, before being instantly electrified by a razor-sharp, enamel-melting spine of blue schist acidity that cuts clean through the sweetness. The finish is virtually eternal and profoundly refreshing, leaving a ringing trail of crystalline saline minerals, citrus pith, and a clean, grippy, and savory tension that makes the mouth water for another sip.
