Crawford River Riesling Henty 2008
Crawford River Riesling is an absolute icon of Australian viticulture, widely regarded as the definitive benchmark for cold-climate Riesling outside of the Clare and Eden Valleys. Established by John Thomson in 1975 in the remote, windswept Henty region of southwest Victoria, this pioneer estate benefits from a truly marginal maritime climate characterized by cold Southern Ocean breezes and a long, slow growing season. The estate-grown fruit is sourced from mature vines anchored in unique, ancient soils of gravelly loam over a deep bed of fossilized limestone. Now under the meticulous winemaking guidance of John’s daughter, Belinda Thomson, the grapes are harvested by hand with uncompromising selectivity. Fermented slowly at cool temperatures in stainless steel vats with minimal intervention, the wine is crafted with zero oak influence or residual sugar, resulting in a bone-dry white of legendary structural purity, chiseled precision, and world-class longevity.
In the glass, it displays a pale, brilliant straw-yellow hue with electric, youthful green glints at the rim. The nose is a masterclass in varietal and mineral focus, opening with an explosive, high-toned bouquet of fresh lime juice, green apple skin, and white grapefruit pith, beautifully underpinned by intricate nuances of orange blossom, wild ginger, and an intense, wet-stone minerality. On the palate, the wine hits with jaw-dropping vertical tension and incredible concentration. A piercing, laser-sharp line of electric, natural acidity slices through the mid-palate, carrying a dense core of citrus and crunchy orchard fruit across a remarkably chalky, tactile texture. The ancient limestone bedrock lends a deep, driving sense of saline minerality that leaves the mouth watering. It concludes with an exceptionally long, clean, and ringing finish of citrus zest and wet flint.
