Domaine de la Cote Pinot Noir Bloom's Field 2022
Perched on the extreme, windswept western edge of the Santa Rita Hills AVA, this iconic estate is masterminded by visionary winemaker Sashi Moorman and sommelier Rajat Parr. The 'Bloom’s Field' block is a prized, 7.44-acre single vineyard situated on a dramatic, south-facing hillside. The vines are rooted in a highly unique geological matrix of ancient, lifted marine sediment and Monterey shale, heavily top-layered with a dense, iron-rich clay loam. Moorman and Parr practice meticulous, certified organic and biodynamic farming with exceptionally high-density planting, forcing the roots deep into the shale bedrock. In the cellar, the wine is treated with absolute minimalist precision: a slow, spontaneous fermentation driven entirely by indigenous wild yeasts utilizing 100% whole clusters (zero destemming) to provide an uncompromising structural and aromatic lift. The wine is then aged for a patient 14 months in seasoned French oak barrels with zero new wood, ensuring the pure, coastal mineral energy remains completely unmasked.
In the glass, it pours a bright, highly translucent ruby-rose color with vibrant magenta glints at the rim. The nose is instantly explosive, ethereal, and deeply cerebral, unlocking a magnificent bouquet of wild alpine strawberries, sour red cherries, and pomegranate skin, intricately woven with a massive signature of whole-cluster spice—freshly cracked white pepper, stemmy green tobacco, chervil, and dried rose petals—all underpinned by a faint, ocean-spray reduction. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in weightless power, structural transparency, and electric vertical drive. The entry is light-to-medium-bodied and remarkably focused, coating the mouth in an energetic wave of crunchy red berries before being instantly chiseled wide open by a razor-sharp, enamel-melting spine of cool-climate natural acidity. What truly defines 'Bloom’s Field' is its phenomenal structural architecture; the whole-cluster stems introduce a noble, tightly woven network of chalky, fine-grained tannins that frame the fruit beautifully. The marine shale bedrock asserts itself on the mid-palate through a deeply tactile mineral weight and a persistent wave of mouth-watering, maritime salinity. It finishes completely bone-dry, ultra-clean, and incredibly persistent, leaving an elegant trail of blood orange rind, white pepper, and a clean, grippy texture.
