Domaine Bernard Gripa St. Joseph 2021
Based in Mauves—the historical heart of the original appellation—father-and-son team Bernard and Fabrice Gripa craft this cuvée from 15 distinct, terraced plots across prized lieux-ditslike Peygros and Saint-Joseph. The mature vines, averaging 30 to 45 years of age, cling to steep, hand-flogged hillsides composed of primary granite and gneiss bedrock. The fruit is harvested entirely by hand due to the sheer verticality of the terrain. In the cellar, the Gripas maintain a blueprint of traditional restraint: the grapes are partially destemmed (retaining roughly 20% whole bunches for aromatic lift) and gently foot-trodden in open wooden vats before a patient, 12-month maturation in large, seasoned 600-liter French oak demi-muids to preserve the mineral-driven identity of the granite soils.
In the glass, it displays a shimmering violet-ruby hue with brilliant clarity. The nose is an incredibly classic and fragrant showcase of Northern Rhône Syrah, unleashing a high-toned bouquet of freshly crushed blackberries, mulberries, and sour red cherries, seamlessly laced with intricate undertones of cracked black pepper, cured black olives, and smoky roasted meats. On the palate, the wine delivers a stunning balance of fleshy volume and vertical, athletic tension. A pure, juicy core of dark bramble fruit is framed by an architectural network of muscular, fine-grained tannins and a vibrant line of natural acidity. The granite soils lend a distinct, crystalline salinity and a smoky, graphite-driven energy that makes the mouth water.
