Joh. Jos. Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2019
Wehlener Sonnenuhr is the vineyard most synonymous with the Joh. Jos. Prüm name — the estate owns five hectares of this majestic site, which offers perfect growing conditions for Riesling with its deep, weather-beaten grey slate soil, good water retention, extreme steepness of up to 70% gradient, and optimal south-south-west exposure. Stuart Pigott has noted that for wine lovers around the world, the Wehlener Sonnenuhr name is synonymous with great Riesling — in top vintages the site yields the richest, silkiest, most seductive wines on the Mosel, the fame of these Rieslings inextricably linked with that of the Joh. Jos. Prüm estate. For centuries the Prüm family has called the village of Wehlen home, with the 33.5-acre estate consisting of nearly 70% ungrafted vines, and the harvest at J.J. Prüm always extremely late, producing wines of exceptional longevity. 2019 was a vintage of bright, precise fruit and lively acidity across the Mosel — conditions the Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett translates with characteristic poise.
The 2019 offers a clear and delicate bouquet of very fine slate and bright, perfectly ripe fruit aromas — round and piquant on the palate, filigreed and crystalline, with an intense, compact and very promising finish; the sweetness delicate and well-countered by mineral grip and salinity. Slate and unopened greengage on the nose, off-dry, linear and snappy, with real drive and a long, neat finish. One taster described it simply: light in colour, lychee on the nose and peach on the finish, with some acidity and a massive finish — just fantastic.
