Jean-Francois Ganevat Trousseau Plein Sud 2019
Plein Sud is Ganevat's most celebrated red wine — the bottling that has done more than almost any other to rehabilitate Trousseau's reputation as a grape capable of genuine seriousness. The fruit comes from vines planted in 1949 and 2000 in the heart of the Jura, on a terroir of grey marl and pebbles with a full south-facing exposure — production is quite small. Farmed biodynamically, the wine is fermented naturally with indigenous yeasts, with no fining, no filtration and no added sulphur — an approach that lets the south-facing exposure express itself with total transparency. Jean-François Ganevat was elected Winemaker of the Year by the Revue du Vin de France in 2018, and Plein Sud is among the cuvées that earned him the honour.
Beautifully aromatic with floral red cherries and spice, with some green hints too — the palate richly textured with some meaty richness, a sanguine quality and a lovely fine acid line, with incredible purity and definition combining richness and freshness in beautiful harmony. The sun exposure gives it a pulpy style built on very ripe red fruits and bold spices — fruity, full flesh that evolves toward freshness and energy, with fine tannins giving way to long persistence. Notes of tart cherries, strawberry skin, white pepper and crushed pebbles dominate the wine's highly drinkable profile.
