Jean-Francois Ganevat Macvin du Jura 1001
Macvin du Jura is one of the Jura's most ancient and singular traditions — a mutage, or mistelle, made by arresting the fermentation of freshly pressed grape juice with the addition of marc spirit before the sugars have converted to alcohol. Ganevat's Macvin is made with one third old Marc du Jura and two thirds Chardonnay and Savagnin grape juice taken at the very beginning of fermentation — once blended, it ages for a further eight years before being bottled and sold, at 17.5% ABV. Described simply as one of, if not the best Macvin ever produced in the Jura — a dessert unto itself, with notes of candied fruit.
Full of seasonal spices — clove, cinnamon, allspice — with depth and refreshing sweetness framed by a pleasant sense of bitterness and decent acidity; distinctive and lovely stuff, best nursed in small pours over many evenings. Honeyed marc infused with white nuts and blood oranges — an old-fashioned but wonderful aperitif, with lovely grapefruit bitters on the finish.
