Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett "Kugel Peter" #12 2021

Hofgut Falkenstein is one of the Saar's most revered and under-the-radar estates — a small family operation run by father-and-son Erich and Johannes Weber, farming around nine hectares of iron-rich grey slate and quartz soils across south-facing slopes near the villages of Niedermennig and Krettnach. The Webers employ near-organic practices and minimal intervention throughout — a single flat cane per vine to limit yields, no herbicides, hand harvesting, whole-bunch pressing, and spontaneous fermentation in individual old Mosel fuder, with each parcel fermenting and ageing in its own named cask, the cask name appearing in small print on the label after the AP number. Kugel Peter — named after the previous owner of this specific cask's parcel — comes from 50-year-old vines in the prime Gross Schock sector of the Krettnacher Euchariusberg, classified in the highest category on the old Prussian taxation maps, fermented down to barely fruity-styled residual sugar of around 40 to 42 grams per litre. 

A beautifully refined nose of white peach, lemon peel, mint, floral elements and fine smoky notes — superbly playful and racy on the palate, leaving a stunningly vibrant feel of fresh orchard fruits and fine herbal elements in the long and multi-layered finish. Bergamot, gooseberry, brisk and crystalline in its most essential form — with 40 grams per litre of residual sugar counterbalanced by lemon, lime leaf, guava, peach, stony minerality and tingling acidity so precisely that the sweetness barely registers as such. Best from 2028 and drinking beautifully through 2042 and likely well beyond — one of the world's great arguments for what Kabinett Riesling can be.
