Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc 2021
The Saumur Blanc is Romain Guiberteau's introduction to what Chenin Blanc can do in the hands of a genuinely great producer — and as an introduction, it sets the bar almost unfairly high. The wine is drawn from vines of various age across three of Guiberteau's prized holdings — Brézé, Clos de Guichaux, and Clos des Carmes — with plantings ranging from 1935 to the early 2000s, assembled to capture the full breadth of what the estate's terroir can offer. All fruit is whole-cluster pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts, with malolactic conversion blocked to preserve the electric acidity that is the Guiberteau signature. Romain Guiberteau owns some of the best land in Brézé, and makes dry Chenin of punk rock violence yet Bach-like logic and profoundness.
The 2021 is archetypal Guiberteau — fleshy, precise, steely Chenin that is all energy: layers of pulpy white and yellow orchard fruits woven with wet rock scents before the sparks fly on a fleshy palate sliced by electric acidity. On the nose a marked saline note leads to white fruit, citrus and jasmine; on the palate the wine is elegant, with a flavour intensity supported by vivid acidity and minerality — qualities that make it equally compelling now and in the cellar for a decade or more.
Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Blanc 2021 is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
