Rockford Riesling Hand Picked Eden Valley 2017
Robert O'Callaghan founded Rockford in 1984 on a mission to preserve traditional Barossa winemaking, and while the winery is best known for old-vine Shiraz, this Riesling shows the same old-school philosophy applied to Eden Valley's most storied white grape. The fruit comes from vineyards planted back in the 1940s in the Flaxman Valley area, high in the Barossa Ranges beneath ancient red gums, where shallow, rocky soil forces vine roots to push through cracks in submerged rock in search of water and scarce nutrients — exactly the kind of struggle that gives Eden Valley Riesling its trademark mineral purity. True to Rockford's patient, unhurried approach, the wine is deliberately held back in the cellar for a year or two before release, well beyond the industry norm of rushing Riesling to market within months of vintage, specifically to build extra complexity, palate weight, and softness that fresher releases simply don't have.
The result is classic, textbook Eden Valley Riesling: an intense, floral nose of lime, lemon, and mandarin peel meets orange blossom, dried herb, and a touch of gardenia, with real minerality running underneath. The palate is crisp and beautifully balanced, citrus-driven with a good mouthfeel and a long, silky finish — lean and lipsmacking rather than austere, with the kind of nervy, high-tensioned energy that makes it equally satisfying young or with a decade of cellaring, as it slowly develops toastier, honeyed complexity.
