Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Bourgogne Les Prielles 2021
Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Bourgogne 'Les Prielles' is a remarkably high-value, terroir-driven Pinot Noir that routinely outperforms its humble regional classification. Located right on the border of the village-level Fixin appellation in the northern sector of the Côte de Nuits, this single-vineyard bottling comes from a flat, one-hectare parcel of old vines planted in 1980. The terroir here is defined by a deep matrix of compact limestone mixed with rich clay marl, which lends the wine a distinct, village-adjacent muscle and structure not typically found in generic regional Burgundy. Acclaimed winemaker Amélie Berthaut handles this old-vine fruit with thoughtful minimalism: the grapes are entirely destemmed to preserve a clean, vibrant fruit profile, followed by a cool maceration and a slow, spontaneous fermentation driven by indigenous yeasts in traditional concrete vats. The wine is then aged patiently for up to 18 months in seasoned French oak barrels with zero new wood, ensuring that the terroir's authentic mineral identity remains completely unmasked.
In the glass, it pours a bright, translucent ruby red with soft garnet undertones. The nose is highly expressive, fresh, and inviting, quickly unfurling a classic bouquet of crunchy cranberries, wild raspberries, and tart red cherries, beautifully layered with delicate savory accents of damp forest floor, dried rose petals, pipe tobacco, and a hint of white pepper. On the palate, the wine delivers a beautiful balance of energetic tension and unexpected density. The entry is bright and light-to-medium-bodied, coating the mouth in an elegant wave of juicy red fruits and sour cherries before being framed by an ultra-fine, chalky network of youthfully taut tannins and a precise spine of natural limestone acidity. The deep clay-marl soils impart a subtle, deeply tactile mineral weight and a long, savory dry finish that leaves a clean trail of pomegranate skin and crushed stone.
