Domaine Anne Gros Grands-Echezeaux 2022
Domaine Anne Gros Grands-Échezeaux Grand Cru is an elite, breathtakingly elegant masterpiece of Burgundy, representing one of the finest and most sought-after expressions of this legendary Côte de Nuits site. Anne Gros, globally revered for her precision and finesse-driven winemaking style, manages a prized 0.25-hectare parcel of old vines within this iconic Grand Cru, directly adjacent to the holdings of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Planted in 1947, these ancient, deep-rooted vines sit on a perfect mid-slope position defined by a complex matrix of Bajocian limestone blocks, silt, and clay. Gros practices sustainable, organic-leaning viticulture to encourage small, highly concentrated berries. In the cellar, the fruit is completely destemmed and undergoes a gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled vats before a patient 16-month maturation in 80% new French oak barrels. This careful wood regimen results in a Grand Cru of immense structural integrity, velvety texture, and a high-toned, intellectual complexity that defines elite Pinot Noir.
In the glass, it reveals a brilliant, translucent ruby-purple hue with shimmering garnet reflections at the rim. The nose is a mesmerizing, multi-layered tour de force, exploding with a high-toned, aristocratic bouquet of wild black raspberries, dark cherries, and red currants, seamlessly interwoven with intricate undertones of exotic Asian spices, sandalwood, dark chocolate, and violets. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in weightless power and fluid grace. A succulent, remarkably concentrated core of crunchy dark fruit entirely coats the mouth, supported by an architectural yet ultra-fine network of silky, cashmere-like tannins and a vibrant line of limestone-driven acidity. The ancient bedrock lends a profound, deeply tactile mineral weight and a distinct, graphite-driven tension that commands the palate. It concludes with an interminable, regal crescendo, leaving a lingering trail of black truffles, forest floor, and a clean, mouth-watering grip.
