Conterno Fantino Barolo Vigna del Gris Ginestra 2017

Regular price $250.00

Conterno Fantino Barolo 'Vigna del Gris' is a breathtaking, highly sophisticated expression of Nebbiolo that captures a remarkably elegant and perfumed side of the legendary Ginestra cru. Located in Monforte d'Alba, one of the most revered communes in the Barolo zone, the Vigna del Gris vineyard was originally planted in 1978 and sits at a steep, amphitheater-like elevation of 350 meters. What sets this specific parcel apart from the broader Ginestra hillside is its unique soil composition: a higher percentage of sand layered over the classic silty-clay limestone (Marne di Sant'Agata). Founders Guido Fantino and Claudio Conterno farm this site under strict certified organic practices. In the cellar, the fruit undergoes a precise, modern vinification featuring short macerations in horizontal rotary fermenters, followed by a patient 24-month maturation in seasoned French oak barriques. This approach tempers Nebbiolo’s naturally ferocious structure, resulting in a Barolo of remarkable textural polish, aromatic focus, and immediate vineyard clarity.

In the glass, it reveals a gorgeous, translucent ruby-orange hue with characteristic brick glints at the rim. The nose is incredibly fragrant and expressive, unleashing a high-toned, aristocratic bouquet of fresh red cherries, crushed raspberries, and dried rose petals, intricately interwoven with complex undertones of white truffle, licorice, tar, and exotic baking spice. On the palate, the wine delivers a masterclass in weightless power and structural contrast. A succulent, remarkably concentrated core of red orchard fruit is framed by an architectural yet ultra-fine network of silky, chalky tannins and a vibrant line of limestone-driven acidity. The unique sandy terroir imparts a distinct, fluid grace and a deep, saline-tinged mineral drive that prevents any sense of heavy brawn. It finishes bone-dry and exceptionally long, leaving behind a lingering, savory trail of blood orange pith, tobacco leaf, and a clean, graphite grip.
