The Faiveley family has been rooted in Burgundy for seven generations, and their approach to Le Clos du Roy reflects exactly that kind of patient, long-view thinking. The parcel itself carries real history — once the property of the Kings of France, and long considered one of the finest sites in all of Mercurey — before Faiveley acquired it in 1971, with vines planted that year and again in 1982. Sitting on the Côte Chalonnaise with a south-southwest exposure over compact, cool white marl and clay-limestone soils, the vineyard is farmed organically, and the family isn't afraid to harvest later than convention dictates — sacrificing yield, if necessary — purely to capture the fullest, most precise expression of the site. The wine is aged fifteen months in French oak, with new wood kept to a restrained 30%, following the Faiveley philosophy that's remained essentially unchanged across generations: precision, patience, and absolute fidelity to what the land itself is saying.

The result has repeatedly drawn comparisons to a Côte de Nuits village wine — remarkable pedigree for the Côte Chalonnaise. Expect cassis, cherry, and ripe raspberry intertwined with smoky spice, liquorice, and a subtle toasted note, opening onto a palate of fine but present, satiny tannins wrapped around precise, restrained fruit and lively acidity. The finish is genuinely long and saline, with echoes of undergrowth, black tea, and the chalky minerality that's become this Clos's calling card.
