Domaine Denis Bachelet Bourgogne 2018

If Charmes-Chambertin is the pinnacle of Denis Bachelet's tiny range, the Bourgogne Rouge is where the story begins — and it's a remarkably good place to start. Drawn from two small plots totalling just over half a hectare, planted in 1977 and 1986, this is the youngest-vine cuvée in the domaine's lineup, though "young" here still means vines with real character behind them. It's handled with exactly the same painstaking approach as everything else at Bachelet: fully destemmed fruit, a cool pre-fermentation maceration, ambient yeast fermentation, gentle punch-downs and pump-overs, and around fifteen to eighteen months in used barriques rather than new oak, letting the fruit and the domaine's signature finesse carry the wine rather than wood.

The result consistently over-delivers for its humble appellation: blackcurrant and raspberry coulis on the nose, giving way to a medium-bodied palate of crunchy red fruit touched with blueberry, all wrapped in fine acidity and a spiced, supple finish. It's Bachelet's house style — pure, perfumed, and quietly refined — distilled into its most accessible, immediately enjoyable form. Drink it young and lightly chilled with charcuterie or a simple roast chicken, or give it a year or two to soften further; either way, this is about as good as entry-level red Burgundy gets, and the easiest way into one of the Côte de Nuits' most quietly worshipped small domaines.
