Clos du Rouge Gorge Cotes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes 2020
Clos du Rouge Gorge 'Vieilles Vignes' Côtes Catalanes is the profound, flagship red cuvée from Cyril Fhal, a revered cult icon of natural winemaking who has completely redefined the potential of the Roussillon. Sourced from exceptionally old Carignan and Grenache vines—some exceeding 50 to 100 years of age—this wine is a masterclass in biodynamic viticulture and terroir precision. The ancient, low-yielding vines are perched on steep hillsides in Latour-de-France, anchored deep within weathered gneiss and schist soils. Fhal completely eschews the heavy extraction, high alcohol, and new oak that define many modern Roussillon reds. Instead, the hand-harvested fruit is treated with standard-setting natural minimalism: a gentle whole-bunch maceration, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous wild yeasts, and aging in neutral wooden foudres. Bottled completely unfined, unfiltered, and with zero added sulfur, it represents an ethereal, high-tension monument to old-vine concentration.
In the glass, it reveals a deep yet brilliantly translucent ruby-purple hue, instantly unleashing a hauntingly complex and wild bouquet. The nose opens with a kaleidoscope of black raspberries, wild dark plums, and blood orange peel, beautifully framed by intricate notes of woodsmoke, cracked black pepper, damp earth, and a distinct, iron-like minerality. On the palate, the wine delivers a stunning display of weightless power and structural depth. A highly concentrated, pure core of crunchy dark fruit is cradled by a framework of ultra-fine, chalky tannins and a vibrant, mouth-watering line of limestone-driven acidity. The finish is exceptionally long, pure, and dry, leaving a lingering, savory trail of wild thyme, crushed slate, and a clean, saline-infused grip that makes the mouth water.
