Devotus Pinot Noir Martinborough Terrace 2022
Devotus — Latin for "devoted" — is a fitting name for what is a genuinely single-minded operation. Don and Valerie McConachy farm just two and a half hectares on the Martinborough Terrace, sitting beside the equally revered Dry River vineyard, growing nothing but Pinot Noir across old, deep-rooted vines now averaging around 29 years of age, planted to a mix of Abel and Dijon clones. This is the estate's flagship bottling — the finest fruit from the site, as opposed to the younger-vine "Aprentis of Devotus" second label — hand-harvested with the same obsessive attention to detail found across the McConachys' tiny operation, wild-yeast fermented, and matured around ten months in seasoned French oak, unfined and unfiltered throughout.
The result shows real earthy depth and structure: forest floor and porcini mingle with dark fruit and dusty, persistent tannin, building slowly and deliberately across the palate rather than announcing itself all at once. It's a wine of real restraint and low-intervention purity — a pure expression of the Martinborough Terrace's cool, free-draining gravel soils, made by growers who've built a reputation almost entirely on quality over volume. Pour it with duck, mushroom risotto, or a rich roast; this is one of Martinborough's most quietly devoted small producers, and proof that some of New Zealand's best Pinot Noir still comes from vineyards you've likely never heard of.
